The Importance of Sensory Play: An Excerpt from the Sprout/Caterpillar Newsletter

I was reading Ms. Molly’s newsletter she sent out to our Sprout and Caterpillar classes and thought what she shared with them was so important that I wanted to share it with everyone. Please see her note below about Sensory Play!

Importance of Sensory Play.

As  you can tell by many of our photos (and sometimes messy clothes), we love water play,  slime, oobleck, shakers, finger paints, and many other sensory activities.  Below is a list and link of the importance of why we do these activities (aside from the fun!).

  1. Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain’s pathways, which lead to the child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks.

  2. Sensory play supports language development, cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction.

  3. This type of play aids in developing and enhancing memory.

  4. Sensory play is great for calming an anxious or frustrated child.

  5. This helps children learn sensory attributes (hot, cold, sticky, dry).
